What Happens During Your Vision Correction Consultation?

Plan to spend approximately one hour with us from start to finish.

During your consultation, our vision correction team will perform several measurements and diagnostic tests to provide a detailed look at your eyes.

1. We Learn About Your Vision

We’ll review your current prescription, medical and eye health information, and what you would like to accomplish with vision correction.

Your goals matter. Maybe you want to stop wearing contacts every day. Maybe you want to exercise, travel, swim, or wake up without immediately having to look for your glasses. Understanding what clearer vision would mean for your life helps us evaluate the options that make the most sense for you.

2. We Perform Advanced Vision Correction Testing

Your consultation may include:

Autorefraction
Provides an initial measurement of your current prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

Corneal Topography
Creates a detailed map of the curvature of your cornea and helps identify features such as astigmatism or irregular corneal shape.

Pentacam Imaging
Provides detailed information about the front and back of the eye, including estimated corneal thickness and other characteristics that can influence vision correction candidacy.

Pachymetry
Uses ultrasound to precisely measure the thickness of your cornea.

These measurements help our team determine whether your eyes are appropriate for laser vision correction or if another option should be considered.

3. We Discuss Which Procedures You May Qualify For

LASIK may be the procedure most people recognize, but LASIK isn’t your only option.

Depending on your eyes, prescription, age, and vision needs, West Texas Eye Associates may consider:

  • LASIK reshapes the cornea using laser vision correction.
  • PRK  reshapes the cornea without creating a LASIK-style flap.
  • EVO ICL – uses an implantable lens to correct vision without permanently removing corneal tissue.
  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) – replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens selected to correct vision.

Different procedures have different candidacy requirements. Someone who isn’t an ideal LASIK candidate may still have another vision correction option available.

That’s why we start with testing instead of trying to fit every patient into the same procedure.

Will I Meet My Vision Correction Surgeon at the Consultation?

Your initial free consultation is primarily focused on testing, candidacy, education, and understanding your options with an optometrist. If you decide to move forward, we’ll schedule a separate dilated examination with your surgeon (ophthalmologist), typically during the week before your procedure. The next evaluation gives your surgeon an opportunity to examine your eyes more thoroughly before finalizing your treatment plan.
