The Benefits of LASIK Eye Surgery

Planning LASIK eye care is intimidating and overwhelming, and you want to know you are working with the best and most experienced eye doctors available. At West Texas Eye Associates, we understand how vital that process is to find an ophthalmologist you can trust. We have seven ophthalmologists and one optometrist on staff and are experienced and knowledgeable about the best procedure for your eye needs.

Understanding the LASIK Procedure

LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. The surgery reshapes the cornea, which is the eye's clear outer covering. Once it is reshaped, light can be properly retracted onto the cornea, resulting in clearer vision.

Of course, having needles or any surgical procedure on your eye is daunting. LASIK is an outpatient procedure that typically only takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Before we begin, we numb the surface of your eye and give you medication to help you relax. Although we perform the surgery while you're awake, few people experience pain or discomfort.

During the procedure, a flap is created in the cornea, then folded back to reveal the stroma, the middle section of the cornea. We remove a precise amount of corneal tissue, which reshapes the curvature of your cornea to improve vision. Then, we put the flap back where it naturally adheres to the cornea, so you don't need stitches.

The Recovery Process After LASIK

Your recovery time will be minimal. Most people return to their normal activities within a day or two. However, avoiding rubbing your eyes or engaging in strenuous activities for a few weeks after the procedure is essential. Most patients experience improved vision within a few days, and the full results are typically apparent after a few weeks.
